“Dominican Nightclub Roof Collapse at Claims 113 Lives: What We Know So Far”

A roof collapse at a Dominican nightclub in Santo Domingo. Dominican Republic has left at least 98 people dead and more than 150 injured. The incident happened early on Tuesday during a concert by famous merengue singer Rubby Pérez at the Jet Set nightclub.


The collapse occurred around 1 a.m. causing panic as the roof fell while hundreds of people were inside.
Among the victims were former Major League Baseball pitcher Octavio Dotel 51, and Nelsy Cruz who is the governor of Monte Cristi province.

Dotel was rescued from the debris but died on the way to the hospital. Cruz, the sister of former baseball player Nelson Cruz, also died in the tragedy.


Rescue workers with about 400 responders have been searching for survivors. Video from inside the Dominican nightclub shows people dancing and sitting at tables just before the roof collapsed.
In one video someone can be heard saying, “something fell from the ceiling,” followed by a loud crash and screams as the roof fell.


Local authorities are still hoping to find more survivors under the rubble, but they fear the death toll may rise as the search continues.

President Luis Abinader shared his condolences with the families of the victims, calling it a national tragedy. He promised that the rescue efforts would continue.
As authorities begin investigating the cause of the collapse, they are looking into whether any structural problems played a role in the disaster.


The collapse has deeply shocked the country, and many people are remembering Dotel, who was a well-loved figure in the Dominican Republic.
